Amateur of the Year 2010

The Amateur of the Year Award has been a major part of the Southern Counties Amateur Radio Association since it was initially endowed in 1962 by the late John Struckell, the general manager of Atlantic City radio station WFPG.
Each year’s honoree is selected by a panel of past recipients based on their personal knowledge of the recipient’s amateur radio activities and recommendations from the general membership.
Our 2010 recipient was licensed a number of years ago and holds an Extra Class license. His love of the Atlantic Ocean has kept him a shore area resident for all his life, except for a few brief periods early in his career. To this day the water continues to be an important part of his life. Many days he can be found in the water off Ocean City riding his surfboard.
He truly is a Renaissance man. You will meet few people who can discuss amateur radio one minute then regale you with intricate details of a starry night sky, all in terms you easily can understand. His knowledge of the weather rivals many of those who make that their profession. He frequently can be heard Monday evenings checking into the SkyWarn practice net and he always is on the air during SkyWarn activations. Each New Year’s Eve he can be heard brass pounding during Straight Key Night.
His travels have taken him to most parts of the world, frequently with a ham radio close by his side. He has been from Africa, to the south Pacific, to the Panama Canal, yes, even to a sailboat racing through a storm toward Bermuda. He also has had a feature article on amateur radio and its possible effects on an implanted pacemaker, published in QST magazine in 1994.
Our recipient is a graduate of Jacksonville University and the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry where he received his medical degree. He studied at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He also has graduated from Rutgers University with a law degree and is a member of the New Jersey State Bar. He is a Board Certified thoracic surgeon with an office in Somers Point. His wife Joanne also is a ham operator and he is the father of two daughters.

It is with great pride that I present to you the 49th SCARA Amateur of the Year honoree,

Doctor Fred Weber, AA2KI

Our AOY Honoree Fred AA2KI Joanne W2JMW and Fred AA2KI
